Ekiti Gov't Tasks Own DisCo On Power Sector Reform Law

Ekiti State Government has charged the management team of the Ekiti Electricity Distribution Company Ltd (EEDCL) to take advantage of the 2023 Electricity Act and Ekiti Electricity Sector Reform Law.

Commissioner for Infrastructure and Public Utilities in the state, Prof. Mobolaji Aluko, who gave the advice, said such will help the company to make positive inroad into the Ekiti Electricity Supply Industry.

He expressed the readiness of the state government to partner and support any credible investor willing to supply electricity to Ekiti.

Prof. Aluko spoke when the management of the EEDCL, an unbundled subsidiary of Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC), paid him a courtesy visit in his office, in Ado Ekiti, the state capital.

The commissioner who assured that the market is open for every electricity service provider, also suggested to the company the use of renewable energy to provide electricity to critical government facilities.

He listed such facilities to include water dams, Agriculture Processing Zone and Ekiti Knowledge Zone, or the expansion of the CNG-based Ekiti Independent Power Project (IPP).

Aluko recalled that the State Electricity Regulatory Bureau had issued three orders to guide electricity investors in the state.

These, Aluko said include an order on mandatory metering to ensure accurate and fair metering of electricity consumption, order to regulate electricity tariffs in line with the Federal Government’s tariff calculation (MYTO) as well as the order on standardisation of electrical installations and equipment nationwide.

The Commissioner who highlighted EEDCL’s areas of coverage for electricity supply Ijero, Efon and Ekiti West local governments via Ilesa Transmission Substation, and Otun, Ilejemeje, Oye and Ikole via Omu Aran TSS, urged the company to do more to expand its services.

In his remarks, Executive Secretary of the Electricity Regulatory Bureau, Engr David Samson, appreciated the company for being proactive since it came on board.

He advised the company to improve on the quantum of energy given to Ekiti State, noting that Ekiti people were ready to pay for electricity usage.

Samson also encouraged the company to accurately ascertain its asset inventory and customer database, and making sure that every customers is metered for proper energy accountability.

The Chief Operating Officer of the Ekiti Electricity Distribution Company, Mr. Emeka Ngwoke, in his response, thanked the state government for licensing the company.

He promised that the company will extend its networks where necessary to improve electricity supply in the state.
