The Emir of Fika, Alhaji Dr. Muhammad Ibn Abali Muhammad Idrisa, has highlighted traditional rulers’  significant roles in promoting sustainable peace and improving cordial community relationships.

The Emir, who is the Chairman of the Yobe State Council of Traditional Rulers, added that traditional rulers are undoubtedly custodians of traditional governance, which is a panacea to security and peaceful coexistence and has been the sole mode of conflict resolution in the sustenance of peace for decades.

The Monarch stated this on Monday during the meeting of traditional rulers of the Lake Chad Basin with the theme “Fostering Sustainable Peace through Traditional Rulers in the Lake Chad,” which formed part of the activities marking the Lake Chad Basin Governors Forum meeting held in Maiduguri, the Borno State capital.

Idrisa said the peace achieved so far has been successful, mainly because the traditional institution has built long-standing trust with its citizenry.

He added that this conference found it expedient to include ‚Fostering Sustainable Peace through Traditional Rulers in the Lake Chad Basin‘ because traditional institutions play a crucial role in fostering peace and mutual coexistence.

„Let me highlight some fundamental points the Royal institution can leverage to sustain peace in the Lake Chad region. As custodians of our cultural heritage who command a high degree of respect, traditional rulers can significantly promote sustainable peace, which can be achieved by the following Fostering dialogue and reconciliation among conflicting parties.

„Encouraging tolerance and understanding among different ethnic and religious groups.

Collaborating with government agencies to address security concerns and promote peaceful coexistence. In this regard, we thank the organisers, our host Governor, His Excellency, the Executive Governor of Yobe State, Hon. Mai Mala Buni (Baraden Fika), and the Yobe State government for this excellent initiative. We pray to Allah for the success of this conference and beyond.

„Finally, since four sovereign states jointly own the Lake Chad Basin, there should be a platform or body where the traditional rulers of these Countries should periodically share ideas and experiences that can further improve and sustain peace within the territory of Lake Chad. We wish you successful deliberation in intending to find sustainable peace in the Chad Basin territory,“ the Monarch said.

In his remarks, Mr Mohammed Alkali, MD/CEO of the North East Development Commission (NEDC) said the commission recognises that the Lake Chad Region, while facing significant challenges, holds immense potential for recovery and sustainable development. Our gathering here today acknowledges the vital and irreplaceable role of traditional leaders in shaping the future of this region.

He said, „The challenges we face in the Lake Chad Basin are complex and interconnected. From security concerns to environmental degradation, displacement to economic disruption—these issues transcend National Borders and require a unified, regional response. This is precisely why the presence of Your Eminences, Our Royal Fathers, and our other distinguished guests is so significant.

„Traditional and Custodian leadership has always been the cornerstone of our societies, as guardians of our cultural heritage and architects of social cohesion. You, our Royal Fathers, possess the wisdom, authority, and deep understanding of local dynamics and norms essential for sustainable peace-building efforts. Your role in mediating conflicts, promoting social harmony, and preserving our cultural values is more critical now than ever.

„Allow me to reflect briefly on our shared history. The Lake Chad Basin has long been a cultural and economic integration symbol. From the ancient trade routes connecting our communities to the shared traditions that have bound us together, this region has consistently demonstrated resilience and unity in the face of adversity.

„These enduring ties remind us that our collective strength lies in cooperation and mutual respect. This workshop represents a vital step in strengthening our collective capacity to address regional challenges. Over the next two days, you will engage in essential discussions on Enhancing collaboration between traditional institutions and public services.

„Managing conflicts between displaced populations and host communities.

Promoting social cohesion and preventing violent extremism.

Developing sustainable approaches to natural resource management.

Strengthening cross-border cooperation and knowledge sharing.“

Alkali said the NEDC fully supports this initiative by the Lake Chad Basin Commission (LCBC) and remains committed to working alongside traditional institutions to achieve shared goals of regional stability, economic recovery, and sustainable development.

„We are particularly pleased that this workshop will establish a consultation and exchange framework for our Royal Fathers. This platform will be invaluable for sharing experiences and best practices and developing coordinated approaches to our common challenges. The lessons we learn today will help us craft actionable strategies that address immediate challenges and secure a peaceful and prosperous future for generations to come,“ he said.
