Life in displacement is challenging and traumatizing. It has dehumanized many Nigerians in the past especially in the middle belt State of Benue where humanitarian concerns were on the back burner.

Many people in Benue have lived in the shadow of displacement; unsettled, vulnerable, and often without a clear path to return home.

Encouraging policy makers to bring about changes that improve the lives of displaced persons in Benue State should be a collective concern of all citizens.

Today, Governor Alia, in collaboration with UN organizations and Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction has launched a plan that focuses on practical, community-based solutions to address the enduring crisis of displacement in Benue.

His administration is working towards durable solutions in an attempt to gradually diminish the needs and vulnerabilities of people and communities affected by humanitarian crises.

This novel initiative will not only provide life-saving support to displaced persons but it will strengthen their capabilities, skills, and increase their resilience.

Attesting to the effectiveness of this initiative, the UN Resident Coordinator in Nigeria, Mohamed M. Malick Fall observed in his speech that Benue, with its fertile lands and agricultural potential, offers a unique opportunity to address both displacement and the challenges posed by climate change.

“The innovative farming techniques pioneered by cooperatives of internally displaced persons (IDPs) reflect the state’s agricultural promise. These efforts not only stabilize communities but also provide a model for sustainable solutions that can be replicated across Nigeria and the broader region”.

A key aspect of the State Action Plan is agricultural recovery. Benue, known as Nigeria’s “food basket,” can regain its position as a cornerstone of national agricultural production.

The Governor’s ambition to make host communities an integral part of finding solutions offers a true potential to find lasting solutions that brings communities together and strengthen the bond among them.

The UN Resident Coordinator having satisfied with the Benue State Action Plan, pledged the continued support of UN thus:

“The United Nations stands in full solidarity with the people of Benue and Nigeria. We are committed to supporting the successful implementation of this State Action Plan by providing resources, technical assistance, and advocacy”.

It is worth explaining that the initiative is not just about the launch of a plan; it is about a long-term vision for the future of Benue and Nigeria. It is about building a future where everyone, displaced or not, can thrive.

Agriculture stands as the cornerstone of Benue State’s economy and is pivotal in Governor Alia’s strategy to rebuild and empower displaced populations.

In collaboration with partners, Governor Alia is quickly providing displaced persons and host communities with agricultural inputs, training, and resources to resume farming activities. This approach would not only ensure food security but also foster economic independence and stability.

In response to the health needs of the people, the Governor has enrolled over 6,273 vulnerable individuals from 15 IDPs’ Camps into the Benue State Health Insurance Scheme, ensuring they receive essential healthcare services that are vital for their well-being.

Also to bolster safety for both IDPs and host communities, Governor Alia has deployed over 5,000 Civil Protection Guards working with the Nigerian security agencies providing a critical layer of security against potential threats.

The vision of the Governor is unequivocal. He aspires  to continue to provide basic service to affected population while the state is working tirelessly to reach durable solution with a future where the term “IDP camp” is relegated to history.
