The Command’s public relations officer (PPRO), SP Ramhan Nansel, confirmed the arrest in a statement in Lafia, the state capital.

He said the arrest followed a complaint from a resident, Madam Mercy Bassey, about a violent altercation between her tenant and his friend.

He said following the complaint, detectives were dispatched to the scene, where they found Ibrahim Matthew, a part-time ND2 Computer Science student, lying in a pool of blood.

The PPRO said the victim was rushed to the General Hospital in Nasarawa town but was pronounced dead due to the severity of his injuries.

SP Nansel said the suspect, John Gambo, an ND2 Banking and Finance student, was apprehended and he confessed to attacking the victim with an axe and a knife.

He noted the weapons, which were stained with blood, were recovered as evidence.

“On the 6th of February, 2025, at about 0200hrs, a report was lodged at Nasarawa Division by one Mercy Bassey, a female resident at the address behind ECWA Peace College, Shagari Road, Nasarawa, regarding a violent altercation between two individuals. The incident occurred between one of her tenants and his friend at their lodge.

“Upon receiving the report, the Commissioner of Police, CP Shetima Jauro Mohammed, immediately sent a team of detectives who promptly responded to the scene. The detectives found one Ibrahim Matthew, a part-time ND2 Computer Science student of the Federal Polytechnic Nasarawa (FPN), lying in a pool of his own blood. Ibrahim had suffered fatal injuries. He was immediately rushed to General Hospital Nasarawa, where he was confirmed dead. The body was subsequently deposited in the morgue for post mortem examination” he explained.

He said the Commissioner of Police, Shettima Jauro Mohammed, has ordered the case to be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department in Lafia for further investigation and prosecution.
