The Adolescent Girls Initiative Learning And Empowerment (AGILE) Project has encouraged teachers and students in Nasarawa State to engage in massive tree plantings in schools across the state.

The state project coordinator, Aisha Aliyu Isoga, said doing so would help mitigate climate change’s effects on the school environment and its surroundings.

She spoke yesterday during a one-day sensitisation on climate change’s impact on teachers and students in Lafia.

She said the programme aims to promote climate change education to reduce its impact on the environment.

“The essence is to promote climate change education and awareness so that together and collectively, both teachers and students would find ways of mitigating or reducing the impact of climate change in our environment.

“We are encouraging them to engage in tree planting and some other environmental activities that would reduce the impact on the society and environment at large,” she explained.

For his part, Aminu Abdullahi, a resource person from the Federal University of Lafia, said understanding natural, human-induced, and other causes of climate change will help the participants overcome climate change challenges.

He said climate change impacts, such as global warming, temperature rise, and rising sea levels, among others, have become serious challenges that are impacting economic livelihoods while urging for synergy to tackle the menace.

A participant, Abdullahi Osha, a teacher with Government Secondary School Keana, said the knowledge he gained at the sensitisation will help him ensure that each of his students plants at least a tree in and around the school and other parts of their community for better climate change management.

Also, a Government Secondary School Maina Lafia student, Akleku Martha Mimido, said the knowledge she acquired at the event would encourage her to plant trees and beautify her immediate environment with flowers and even vegetables.
