Abia Govt Set To Tackle Housing Deficit

The Abia State government has announced a proposal to embark on four housing estates soon in and around the capital, Umuahia to tackle housing deficit.

The commissioner for Information, Okey Kanu stated this while briefing the press on the outcome of this week’s Executive Council meeting chaired by the governor, Alex Otti.

He said the proposed sites are located one each in Aba, the commercial hub of the state and Obehie in Ukwa West local government area, and two in Mbaisii and Mgbarakuma, Umuahia.

According to the commissioner, discussions are already in top gear with private developers “for the projects which the government is very intentional about’.

In a remark, his counterpart of the ministry for Lands, Chaka Chukwumereije said the government is also engaging in another housing programme tagged “New Umuahia Project”.

His words:”The new Umuahia is located between Abia Tower and Ntigha Junction and it would cover about an area of 2,000 hectares, affecting about 19 communities at that corridor.”

Chukwumereije, who said that much is happening in the state’s housing sector, added that the public would be duly informed as soon as the project paper work was completed.
