Nigeria has reinforced its position as a key player in the global road safety campaign, stepping up efforts to reduce road accidents and improve transportation safety.

With renewed commitments from government agencies and stakeholders, the country is implementing strategic measures to enhance road infrastructure, enforce traffic regulations, and promote public awareness of safe driving practices.

At the 4th Global Ministerial Conference on Road Safety in Marrakech, Morocco, Nigeria’s Kwapda’as Road Safety Demand (KRSD) Foundation won two prestigious international awards.

The non-governmental organisation (NGO) was recognised for its outstanding contributions to road safety advocacy, particularly through a film it produced to promote safer road use.

Receiving the awards on behalf of KRSD, the foundation’s founder, Hon. Justice Monica Dongban-Mensem, expressed gratitude for the recognition and reaffirmed her commitment to advancing road safety in Nigeria and beyond.

“Road tragedies are a major crisis, and all hands must be on deck to tackle this menace. If we all commit to this cause, we can change the situation,” she stated.

Justice Dongban-Mensem, who also serves as the President of the Court of Appeal, emphasized the urgent need to address road safety challenges, especially with the increasing pressures of population growth and urbanisation.

“We are midway through the Decade of Action on Road Safety, yet we continue to witness tragic incidents on our roads. This should not be the case,” she lamented.

She also highlighted the gap between policy promises and real-life road conditions, calling for greater youth involvement in advocacy efforts to drive tangible change.

The conference, held every four years, serves as a platform for governments worldwide to reaffirm their commitments to reducing road crashes. Co-hosted by the King of Morocco, His Royal Majesty Mohammed VI, and the United Nations, the 2025 edition was themed “Commit to Life.”

This event brought together over 5,000 participants from more than 100 delegations, including representatives from 52 African countries.

Morocco’s Minister of Transport and Logistics, Abdessamad Kayouh, underscored the importance of the Marrakech Declaration, a key document designed to enhance global cooperation on road safety.

“This declaration is the result of a collaborative effort, reflecting the voices and contributions of all stakeholders. It is not merely a statement of intent but a call to action a roadmap for achieving meaningful progress in road safety worldwide,” he said.
