The Federal Government, through the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), has added 640 megawatts (MW) of transmission capacity to the national grid with the commissioning of six substations in Kano and Katsina states.
The government said the projects would improve access to reliable electricity across the country.
On Wednesday in Kano State, the Federal Government commissioned four transmission substations at Walalambe, Kumbotso, Dakata and Dan-Agundi. Together, they added 544MW of wheeling capacity to Kano State and the grid.
On Friday in Katsina State, it commissioned two new 60 MVA, 132/33 kV transmission substations in Kankia Local Government Area. The substations added 96MW of transmission capacity to the national grid.
Together, the projects brought the total capacity commissioned within the week to 640MW.
Speaking at the commissioning of the Katsina substation on Friday, the Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe, credited President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his commitment to reforming the power sector.
“Mr. President’s Renewed Hope Agenda recognizes that economic ambition requires dependable infrastructure,” he said.
He added: “By supporting vital investments such as this, the administration is laying stronger foundations for enterprise, employment, and prosperity across every part of the country.”
Tegbe explained that the new facility would strengthen the network’s capacity to distribute available electricity across Katsina State and its environs. He said this would boost commercial activities and improve household welfare.
The minister also urged residents of the host communities to protect the public infrastructure.
“Report suspicious activities promptly to the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) or security agencies. These assets serve your businesses, your neighbors, and your children; safeguarding them protects your community’s future,” he said.
In his address, the Katsina State Governor, Mallam Dikko Umaru Radda, described the completion of the project as a landmark investment in the state’s power infrastructure.
He said steady and reliable electricity would drive economic growth, industrial development and better public service delivery.
Radda thanked President Tinubu for approving the project. He also commended the Federal Ministry of Power and the TCN for their dedication to its successful delivery.
The commissioning was attended by senior officials of the Federal Ministry of Power, the TCN and the Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO), as well as members of the Katsina State Executive Council.
