The Organization for Women in Science for the Developing World has lamented that despite significant strides in higher education, women remain underrepresented in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics.

The organisation’s coordinator of the Umudike chapter, Mabel Onwuka, stated this at the 2025 International Day of Women, Girls In Science at Awom na Ebo Secondary School, Amawom Oboro, Ikwuano local government area, Abia State.

Speaking on the theme “Unpacking STEM Careers: Her Voice in Science,” Onwuka emphasized the importance of amplifying the voices of women in STEM and noted the need for girls to embrace the subjects.

The soil science professor identified societal stereotypes, limited access to education, and lack of mentorship opportunities “as factors contributing to the negative trend.”

The coordinator highlighted the achievements of women and girls in scientific fields and advocated for gender equality in STEM education and careers.

Contributing, the deputy vice chancellor of administration, Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike, Ursula Akanwa, urged the girl to shun distractions and remain focused on their chosen field of science.

Akanwa, therefore, stressed that the government at all levels in the country should prioritise girl-child science education, noting that such a move would close the gender gap in STEM careers.

In a vote of thanks, the school principal, Ann Oti, thanked the chapter for giving the opportunity and assured that the school would do everything within its power to encourage the STEM careers of the students.

High points of the event were the presentation of books to the girls/school and the grouping of the girls to enhance interactions and mentorship.
