The Federal Ministry of Livestock Development has revealed plans to genetically upgrade indigenous cattle and expand commercial fodder cultivation to boost Nigeria’s livestock sector.

During the weekend, the minister reaffirmed the government’s commitment to modernising livestock production through improved breeding, enhanced food security, and increased investment in pasture development.

“We will create models of animals so that our indigenous cattle can be upgraded genetically to provide the meat and milk required for this country. We aim to quadruple the number of animals in the next five years and grow the cattle industry from $32 billion to $74 billion,” he stated.

As part of the drive for commercial fodder production, the ministry has contacted sub-national governments for land allocation. It is encouraging private investors to explore opportunities in large-scale pasture cultivation, including exports to the Middle East.

Beyond genetics and fodder, the ministry’s strategy includes improved animal health management, modern breeding techniques, and fostering peace between farmers and herders.

These initiatives align with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s vision of diversifying Nigeria’s economy through agriculture.

The minister emphasised his commitment to working with stakeholders and cutting bureaucratic red tape to fast-track reforms in the livestock industry.
