In a momentous gathering that heralds a new chapter for aquatics in Nigeria, the Nigeria Aquatics Federation has officially launched the ‘Swim to Future’ Kiddies Championship.

The event scheduled to hold from February 28 to March 1, aims to identify and develop 100 talented young swimmers by the year 2025, marking a significant investment in the nation’s sporting future.

Addressing a diverse audience of sponsors, press, and distinguished guests in Abuja yesterday, the federation’s president, Chinoye Daphey Aliyu, expressed great enthusiasm and responsibility towards nurturing the potential of Nigeria’s youth in swimming. “With the right training, mentorship, and opportunities, our young swimmers can rise to compete at the highest levels,” he stated, emphasizing the importance of providing access to professional training and competitive opportunities across the country.

The ‘Swim to Future’ initiative is set to kick-off in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) as a pilot program, with plans for expansion into other regions, ensuring that every child with an interest in swimming has the chance to excel.

“This program is just the beginning; following its success, the federation plans to introduce the ‘SWIM FOR LIFE’ Championship, an inter-school competition designed to foster healthy rivalry and sportsmanship among young swimmers nationwide,” Aliyu stayed.

Highlighting the success of emerging talents like Demilade Akanbi and Aidan Dumuje-Abili, who recently excelled at the National Youth Games, the president underscored the federation’s commitment to creating an enabling environment for young athletes. With records set and medals won, these young swimmers symbolize the bright future that awaits Nigeria in the sport.

The federation’s vision extends beyond merely building champions; it seeks to instill values of discipline, resilience, and excellence in the youth. The president concluded with a call to action for young swimmers, encouraging them to embrace this opportunity wholeheartedly.

“With the support of the National Sports Commission and various partners, the Nigeria Aquatics Federation is poised to chart a new course for swimming in the country,” she added.

As the nation looks to the future, the ‘Swim to Future’ Championship stands as a beacon of hope and opportunity for aspiring young athletes, promising to elevate Nigeria’s presence on the international stage.
