In a thrilling showcase of athletic prowess, Army Day Secondary School, Maitama, has been crowned the overall champion of the senior school classification at the Wike Renew Hope School Sports Festival. The school clinched an impressive total of seven gold, six silver, and three bronze medals, marking a significant achievement in the competitive event.
The festival, held to promote sportsmanship and physical education among students, also saw Junior Secondary School, Karu, excel in the junior category, securing four gold medals. Meanwhile, LEA Kpadna emerged as the top performer in the primary category, also with four gold medals.
Speaking during the closing ceremony at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium Abuja, yesterday, FCT Minister Barrister Nyeson Wike, represented by Education Secretary Dr. Danlami Ayo, congratulated all participants for their hard work and dedication. “I congratulate all the athletes for the efforts and energy you have put into this sports festival. I’m sure your parents and school community will be proud of you,” he stated.
Dr. Ayo emphasized the importance of sports in education and personal development, noting, “Sports is an essential component of learning and a healthy lifestyle. Engaging in regular physical activity can improve overall wellbeing and quality development of an individual. Above all, sports build relationships among students, teachers, and the community at large.”
Highlighting the festival’s potential to attract investment, Dr. Ayo added, “This Nyeson Wike Renew Hope School Sports Festival will attract investors within and outside the shores of the country. Investment in sports enhances economic growth, and the sports industry contributes significantly to the economy of any country. I encourage investors to rally around these athletes in the award of scholarships or any rewards that will facilitate their performance in sports.”
