When the Noxx Style announced the release of its latest collection, Calligraphy, it was accompanied by a promise of fluid artistry and bold storytelling through fabric.

Spearheaded by the creative synergy of Bens Vivian Uchechukwu and Onyeka Sandra Oleka, the collection reflects a seamless blend of illustration mastery and technical construction expertise. The duo are recognized for their precision in fashion design – where Bens Vivians excels in conceptualizing and sketching, and Onyeka’s expertise lies in garment construction and pattern making.

The Calligraphy collection thrives on a juxtaposition of soft, flowing, structured designs. The black and white kaftan, arguably the most visually commanding piece, is a testament to Ben’s illustration skills. The prints are expertly integrated into the fabric, likely involving digital textile printing. While this is commendable, the oversized drape is a recurring design and a more creative approach to layering or volume control could have elevated the design. Onyeka’s mastery in garment construction is evident in the black bodycon dress with a sheer pink tulle kimono. The contrast between the base and the soft overlay is a case study of balancing fluidity. The stitch quality is impeccable, with invisible seams ensuring the tulle remains weightless without puckering.

The black boubou with an Aso-Oke panel stands out for its cultural resonance, combining smooth satin with the rigidity of the traditional handwoven fabric. The measurement points are executed carefully to ensure the Aso-Oke panel aligns with the bodice for a well-balanced visual break. The Ankara print midi dress with puff sleeves also delivers drama and exercises appropriate proportion control. Noxx Style largely succeeds in finishing the clothes, as evidenced by the quality of closures, the neat zipper alignments, and the placement of the brand tags that do not interfere with the designs. The use of invisible hems on flowing pieces like the kaftan ensures an unbroken line, enhancing the illusion of a continuous drape.

The collection’s target audience is women who appreciate bold cultural statements without compromising sophistication. For instance, the black boubou with Aso-Oke will likely attract clientele who favour Afrocentric wear. At the same time, the Ankara midi dress is poised to perform well among those who gravitate towards those who appreciate an artistic edge in their otherwise simple dressing. Noxx Style’s Calligraphy collection showcases technical excellence, cultural homage, and creative abilities. While Bens Vivian Uchechukwu’s illustrative prowess is evident in the printed kaftan, Onyeka Sandra Oleka’s pattern-making and construction mastery shines in the fitted dresses.
