A devastating tragedy occurred in Hiitom Ikyor, in Ushongo Local Government Area of Benue State, as a woman and her newborn quadruplets lost their lives due to inadequate and poor medical attention.

Our correspondent gathered that a mother who gave birth to quadruplets at St. Francis Primary Healthcare Centre died after some hours with all the babies.

It was gathered that they all died because of the complications which arose due to lack of proper antenatal care and inadequate medical attention during delivery.

However, it was gathered that the State government got wind of the situation and sent a delegation from the Benue State Emergency Management Agency (BSEMA) to visit and relocate them to the Benue State University Teaching Hospital in Makurdi for proper medical attention.

A statement by the SEMA information officer Tema Ager informed that a few minutes after the arrival of the SEMA delegation, the mother and three of the babies succumbed to their conditions and gave up the ghost at the primary healthcare facility.

He said, “In a desperate move to save the surviving child, they rushed the infant to General Hospital Katsina-Ala for stabilisation, but unfortunately, passed away during the process.

According to Tema, the tragedy sparked widespread mourning in the community, with many calling for improved access to quality healthcare services in the area.

He states, “the Benue State government has pledged to investigate the tragedy’s circumstances and take measures to prevent similar incidents.

Our correspondent reports that all the health centres in communities across the 23 Local Government areas of the State, which are the major health facilities closer to the rural populace, are operating without doctors and qualified nurses. Most of the patients who attend these facilities are left in the hands of the ward attendants.

It was reported that the Benue State Government had allocated 15 per cent of the 2025 State budget to the health sector, the first allocation of its kind in the state’s history.
