Husk Power Systems, a multinational renewable energy company, has introduced a paid period leave policy. Under this policy, female employees can take one paid day off monthly to support their menstrual health.

The initiative is part of the company’s commitment to gender equality and workplace inclusivity. It complements the recently launched ‘SHE’ (Support, Help, Empower) Buddy programme, which fosters a supportive work environment.

Speaking on the policy, Olu Aruike, Husk’s Nigeria Country Director, said: “As a leader in the renewable energy sector, we recognize the industry’s gender equity challenges. This policy marks a significant step towards fostering a supportive and inclusive work environment for our female colleagues.

“ Drawing from my experience with female-led organizations, I believe this initiative will enhance their experience and contribute to a broader shift in how businesses approach gender inclusion, driving greater productivity and progress.”

Husk Power, which operates in Nigeria, India, and Tanzania, describes gender equality as a key driver of business growth and sustainability. In Nigeria, where gender disparities persist, the company aims to set an example by supporting its female workforce, which currently stands at 34% and is growing.

Husk Power’s policies align with a global movement advocating gender-sensitive workplace reforms. Countries such as Japan, South Korea, and Zambia have already introduced menstrual health considerations in their labour policies.

Sanya Kachhap, who leads the company’s gender and Impact Initiatives, emphasised that gender equity is central to Husk’s long-term vision.

“Achieving 2X Certification is not just about meeting a standard; it’s about embedding gender equity-driven strategies into the DNA of our business model. Beyond providing clean energy, we create opportunities enabling women’s leadership, financial independence, and entrepreneurial success, particularly in rural and semi-urban areas.”
