World Book Day: Don Harps On Imbibing Reading Culture

In celebration of World Book Day, a scholar, Prof Bosede Adimula-Afolayan has sensitised students on the need of imbibing book reading culture early in life.

Adimula-Afolayan who reviewed her book, entitled “Once Upon An Elephant” was a guest at an event organised by Caleb International College (CIC), Magodo, Lagos. She spoke on the importance of schools exposing their students to the merits of reading books and literary materials.

The organisers said students from six secondary schools namely, Vivian Fowler Memorial College, Thomas Valley College, Lumen Christi College, Redeemers High School, Straight Grade High School and Caleb International College, attended the occasion and Caleb Int’l College student did a dream presentation.

Adimula-Afolayan stated that the book, which is a play, was inspired by other plays by male authors who portrayed women as vulnerable and sex objects. She wanted to change the narrative and created a character like Iya Agba who dethroned the King, Ajanaku.

The scholar who witnessed female students from six schools answer questions from the play, “Once Upon An Elephant,” lauded the initiative by Caleb International College saying, “I am elated and very pleased by the students and their knowledge of literature.

Adimula-Afolayan, a professor of Comparative Drama from University of Lagos, added that it was essential for schools to develop the potential of students in arts and literature as this will engender a good and responsive society.

She also spoke on behalf of women that they should be supported and that women should stand up to be counted as the era of being relegated to the kitchen is gone.

The principal of Caleb Int’l College (Snr School), Mrs Omoluabi-Okechukwu stated that the celebration of ‘World Book Day’ by the school was in tandem with the policy of the institution to promote excellence in different facets of education.
