Kwara Moves To Reduce Maternal Mortality Rate, Trains 25 Medical Personnel

The Kwara State government has organised special training programme for 25 medical personnel on comprehensive emergency obstetric and newborn care (CEMONC) to aid the safety of mother and child during childbirth.

LEADERSHIP reports that the training programme was geared towards reducing maternal mortality rate in the state.

At the flagg-off of the 14- day training in Ilorin, the Commissioner for Health, Dr Amina El-Imam said the training was targeted at improving the safety of pregnant women and the newborn as well as reducing maternal mortality, especially during delivery.

“The essence of the training is to equip those on the frontline, who were experts in obstetric and healthcare to further improve on their skills.

“This training will enhance your clinical skills and competence among others. It will also help you more in leadership. It is high time therefore to groom leaders to match your technical skills with current reality, now is time to train other professionals in the field”, she added.

El-Imam who spoke about government’s efforts at upscaling healthcare delivery in the state, disclosed that the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) has approved five facilities in Kwara State to be at the frontline of fighting maternal mortality and providing Caesarian sections for free in the state.

She noted that the gesture is not unconnected with government’s efforts at ensuring access to free medical services, across the state.

The UNICEF representative in the state, Dr Hadiza Aliyu commended the state government for bringing quality healthcare services to the doorstep of residents of the state.

She expressed delight that the state government has created enabling environment for development partners to work, especially in the health sector.
