At least four people have been killed after gunmen attacked Sabon Angwa community, around Bet/Zat in Barkin Ladi Local Government Area of Plateau State, on Thursday night, despite an existing curfew.
LEADERSHIP gathered that the attackers stormed the community at about 8pm and opened fire on residents, triggering panic among the inhabitants.
A resident of Barkin Ladi, Mr Bulus Jok, who confirmed the incident, said the gunmen struck despite the curfew imposed to check attacks and restore security in parts of the state.
“The gunmen struck the community around 8pm despite the curfew in place and started shooting sporadically,” he said.
Jok added that the attackers shot indiscriminately, killing four people.
“The attack created panic in the community, and four people were killed,” he said.
He described the incident as particularly disturbing, noting that an early warning alert had reportedly been sent to the relevant authorities a day before the attack.
Also confirming the incident, the Publicity Secretary of the Berom Youth Moulders-Association (BYM), Mr Rwang Tengwong, said suspected terrorist gangs attacked Sabon Angwa and killed four residents.
“We condemn this latest attack in strong terms and lament the loss of these lives,” Tengwong said.
He expressed concern that communities were still being attacked despite the security measures and curfew introduced to protect residents.
The BYM spokesman urged security agencies to intensify surveillance, strengthen their presence in vulnerable communities and respond promptly to early warning alerts to prevent further attacks.
Efforts to reach the Public Relations Officer of the Plateau State Police Command, DSP Alfred Alabo, for comments were unsuccessful as of the time of filing this report.
