In a remarkable display of dedication to public health, Dr. Ayoola Jaiyesimi and a team of committed doctors recently spearheaded an extensive public advocacy and awareness campaign on Hepatitis B and HIV in riverine communities across Ajah, Ilaje, and surrounding rural areas in Lagos State.

The initiative aimed to educate residents about the causes, implications, remedies, and prevention strategies for Hepatitis B and HIV, two major public health concerns.

Recognising the vulnerability of the communities due to limited access to healthcare services, the campaign team designed an inclusive and interactive programmre to ensure maximum reach and impact.

Activities during the campaign included Community Sensitisation where the team engaged local leaders, community heads, and influential figures to foster trust and encourage participation.

Similarly, there was Health Talks and Demonstrations as medical experts provided in-depth explanations on Hepatitis B and HIV transmission, symptoms, and prevention. Visual aids, real-life examples, and interactive Q&A sessions were used to simplify complex medical concepts.

On Screening and Testing, free on-site testing for Hepatitis B and HIV was offered, with counselling services provided for individuals who tested positive.

There was also Vaccination and Treatment Support, where residents were guided on available treatment options, and Hepatitis B vaccinations were administered to those at risk even as there was distribution of Educational Materials as Pamphlets, posters, and flyers in local dialects were shared to ensure information could be retained long after the campaign.

Dr. Ayoola Temitope Jaiyesimi, who is also the Medical Director at Newgate Medical Services Limited as well as a public health specialist, emphasised that the campaign’s goal was to empower residents with knowledge, reduce stigma, and connect individuals to essential healthcare services.

“This initiative is not just about awareness; it’s about fostering healthier communities by ensuring people have the right information and access to medical support,” Dr. Jaiyesimi remarked.

The campaign was met with overwhelming appreciation from the communities, as locals expressed gratitude for the life-saving information and medical support provided. Plans are underway to extend the campaign to more underserved areas across Lagos State.
