During a meeting with the Chinese ambassador to Nigeria, H. E. Yu Dunhai, Wike emphasised the significance of these sectors for Nigeria’s development.

He told the ambassador, “Agriculture is very key. Nigeria has magnificent land for farming. It would interest us more if we could partner on that, especially in vocational education, particularly as it relates to ICT.”

Wike highlighted the importance of youth and education in the nation’s progress: “If we must move forward, education is key, and the youth is key. I would like us to cooperate on these two vital areas and see how we can establish a symbiotic relationship.”

The minister further informed the ambassador about a recent Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between the FCT and two Chinese firms, CGC and CCECC. The agreement focuses on satellite water development and enhancing street lighting in Abuja.

“CGC will handle the satellite water development, while CCECC and CGC will work together to improve the city’s lighting, given that many of our streetlights have been vandalised. We are in the process of procuring upgraded streetlights that will deter vandalism,” he said.

He also mentioned the significance of water supply, noting, “The President believes this must be done, especially with Abuja approaching its 50th anniversary next year.”

Earlier, the Chinese ambassador acknowledged Abuja’s rapid development under Wike’s leadership, commending the construction of new roads and infrastructure improvements that have enhanced connectivity across the FCT.

“We have observed significant infrastructure improvements, and roads that once faced abrupt interruptions are now well connected.  China is eager to partner with Nigeria to achieve our common development objectives, especially under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda,” he said.

He reaffirmed China’s commitment to strengthening bilateral relations, highlighting the mutual political trust and developmental cooperation between the two nations. He noted that a major water project, valued at approximately $400 million, is underway in Abuja.

The ambassador also praised Chinese companies’ collaboration in building significant infrastructure, such as the Abuja rail network and various agricultural projects involving trilateral cooperation between China, Germany, and Nigeria.

While stressing the importance of educational partnerships, Yu Dunhai mentioned the establishment of “China Corners” in local schools, which aim to foster cultural exchange and education.

“We believe the future lies in our youth, and we are committed to enhancing people-to-people communication,” he said.
