The Nigerian Senate has confirmed the appointment of four nominees as members of the Police Service Commission (PSC), following a request from President Bola Tinubu.

The confirmation came after the presentation of a comprehensive report by the Senate Committee on Police Affairs, chaired by Senator Madori Abdulhamid (Jigawa East).

LEADERSHIP reports that President Tinubu had in a letter to the Senate in November 2024, sought for the confirmation of the nominees as members of the PSC.

The letter reads in part: “In accordance with the provisions of Section 154(1) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended), I am pleased to present for confirmation by the Senate the appointments of the under-listed four (4) nominees as Members of the Police Service Commission.

“While it is my hope that the Senate will consider and confirm the nominees in the usual expeditious manner, please accept, Distinguished Senate President, the assurances of my highest consideration and personal regards.”

In his remarks, Senator Abdulhamid urged his colleagues to approve the nominees, emphasising that they had undergone thorough screening and were found competent to serve on the Commission.

Also speaking, Senator Simon Lalong (Plateau Central) praised the nominees for their professionalism and integrity, stating that their appointment would positively impact the work of the Commission and enhance policing in Nigeria.

Other Senators who contributed to the debate echoed similar sentiments, unanimously affirming the qualifications and suitability of the nominees.

The Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, in his remarks after the absence of any objection on the floor against the nominees, resolved the Senate into the Committee of the Whole.

The nominees were subsequently confirmed by the Senate.

The newly confirmed members of the Police Service Commission include Justice Paul Adamu Galumje (Retired), Abdulfatah Mohammed, DIG Uba Ringim (Retired), and Justice Christine I. Dabup (Retired).
