The police have arraigned two women, Blessing Chima, 47, and Williams Chikamson Amsy, 49, before the Federal High Court in Lagos over their alleged involvement in N75 million fraud.
The police arraigned Chima and Amsy before Justice Ambrose Lewis-Alagoa on a four-count charge of obtaining by false pretences, illegal conversion, and money laundering.
Specifically, Chima was alleged to have defrauded one Lanre Afebuameh on July 4 and 5, 2024, by obtaining the sum of N75 million in two instalments of N25 million and N50 million, respectively.
The prosecution also alleged that the defendant claimed that she would exchange this money for Chinese Yen and send it to his clients in China, a representation she knew to be false.
The second defendant, Amsy, was accused of receiving N140 million at some point in 2024, part of which belonged to Afebuameh and was allegedly stolen by Chima.
The police maintained that Amsy ought to have reasonably known that this sum was the proceeds of crime but still acquired, used, and retained possession of it.
During Wednesday’s proceedings, the police prosecutor, Sunday Ayodele, informed the court that he had an amended four-count charge and requested that the charge be read so the defendants could enter their pleas.
After the charges were read the defendants pleaded not guilty.
Following the development, the prosecutor called the complainant, Afebuameh, the alleged fraud victim, to testify.
