UNWomen Nigeria Country Representative, Beatrice Eyong, has said the agency was supporting a bill targeted at creating special seats for women at the National Assembly.

Eyong who spoke at an exhibition ‘Women Who Inspire You’ organised by the Embassy of France to mark the International Women’s Day (IWD), noted that while there were local and international data from the World Bank, the United Nations and National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) to prove Nigeria’s successes in the promotion of gender equality in many areas since 2015 – 2025, much needs to be done to address areas such as women leadership and in governance.

She said contrary to the belief that there were seats reserved for women in the National Assembly, those are mere legislations yet to be implemented, including the revised National Gender Policy which recommends 35 per cent female representation.

“Nigeria has ratified 75 per cent of all judicial texts, conventions, resolutions for the promotion and protection of women’s rights.”

It is the implementation that is the problem. Let nobody tell you that there are seats reserved for women in the National Assembly,” she said.
