The Nigeria Police Force appears to be in a quandary over its investigation into the alleged infiltration of the National Assembly by Russia’s KGB (Komitet Gosudarstvennoy Bezopasnosti), the former Soviet security agency.
Checks revealed that the Police Headquarters had invited Senator Sunday Karimi (Kogi West) for interrogation following a petition filed by his colleague, Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan (Kogi Central).
According to the petition, dated March 5, 2025, Akpoti-Uduaghan, who is currently serving a six-month suspension from the Senate, requested that the police investigate Karimi’s claim that KGB operatives had infiltrated the National Assembly, posing a serious threat to Nigeria’s democracy.
In her petition, she alleged that Senator Karimi shared a report titled “KGB Agent Group Warns Senate: A Call for Vigilance Amidst Threats to Democracy” on the official WhatsApp group of the 10th Senate on February 23, 2025.
She urged the Police not to take Karimi’s alarm lightly, declaring: “No nation can afford to ignore the presence of such a group within its legislative body.”
Further checks revealed that Senator Karimi honoured the police invitation and appeared at Louis Edet House on Monday to state his position.
Sources at Police Headquarters described the session as “positive with useful disclosures,” confirming that Karimi owned up to his post. However, they expressed surprise that Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan has since distanced herself from her own petition and has repeatedly ignored invitations to appear before investigators.
“We reached out to her after our session with Senator Karimi. We wanted to hear from her as well, but she has continued to ignore our invitation.
That is disturbing because we do not expect her to suddenly abandon a petition with such a sensitive allegation against her colleague,” a police source stated.
According to the source, Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan initially claimed she was outside the country, but a viral video of her visiting her constituency has raised doubts about her claim.
“It is difficult to reconcile her claim of being outside the country with the available information.
We do not want to meddle in Senate politics, but it would be scandalous for her to try to use the police as a tool in her political battles,” the source added.
When asked about the next course of action, the source said senior officials would decide how to handle what they now consider a frivolous petition.
In her response, Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan denied claims that she had ignored police invitations to clarify her petition.
She clarified that she had not received any fresh invitation from the police since Senator Karimi’s interrogation.
“Apart from being invited to adopt my petition, I haven’t been invited,” she stated.
