The federal government has cleared a Chinese company and its personnel of any involvement in the shooting of an immigration officer in Niger State, dismissing earlier allegations that the company was complicit in the incident.

In a statement, the minister’s special adviser on media and publicity, Mr. Babatunde Alao, stated: “In response to reports about the alleged shooting of a Nigeria Immigration Service officer in Niger State, it is important to note that the preliminary report, after a thorough review, found no direct involvement from the firm or its personnel. The shooting has been classified as a tragic accident.

“It has been determined that the officer’s injury occurred due to a stray bullet during a shooting incident and not as a result of any deliberate action by the Chinese firm or its employees.”

Alao, however, added that further investigation was ongoing to thoroughly investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting and assured that anyone found responsible would face appropriate consequences.

He quoted the minister as reaffirming his unwavering commitment to ensuring the safety, dignity and professional integrity of all law enforcement officers.

He highlighted the government’s continued support for law-abiding businesses in Nigeria and reiterated the ministry’s dedication to fostering strong partnerships with foreign nationals, with the goal of promoting sustainable collaboration for socio-economic development.

He said the officer who was reportedly injured during the incident, had been receiving medical attention and was expected to make full recovery. He emphasised the importance of ensuring proper investigations and not jumping to conclusions based on unverified reports.
