CAN Sues For Unity, Justice As Muslims Celebrate Eid-el-Fitr

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has congratulated Nigerian Muslims on the end of Ramadan fasting and celebration of the 2025 Eid-el-Fitr.

In a congratulatory message on the occasion, CAN President, Archbishop Daniel Okoh stressed the significance of Eid-el-Fitr as a time of reflection, prayer, and reflection.

“This festival marks the end of a sacred month of fasting, prayer, and reflection. As Christians, we resonate with these practices, sharing values of prayer, fasting, charity, and community with our Muslim neighbours. These principles form the foundation of our unity and offer hope for a stronger, more harmonious Nigeria,” he stated.

Okoh, however emphasised the pressing challenges facing the nation, expressing concern over security threats, rampant kidnappings, and violence that loom over communities.

“Economic difficulties, including soaring inflation and widespread unemployment impose immense burdens on countless families. Social unrest, fueled by these grievances, continues to test our resilience,” he said.

On the recent killing of hunters who were reportedly traveling from Port Harcourt to Kano for Eid-el-Fitr in Uromi, Edo State, the CAN President urged the federal government to investigate the tragic incident.

“These innocent men were mistaken for kidnappers because of their traditional hunting tools and fell victims to mob violence, beaten and burned alive, denied any chance of due process. This extrajudicial killing is a grievous violation of human rights and a chilling reminder of the dangers of lawlessness.

“These tragedies inflict profound pain and could erode trust in our legal system. There is an urgent need for effective law enforcement and the upholding of the rule of law,” he said.

The CAN president while extending condolences to the families of the victims and all those affected by violence and injustice across Nigeria, urged the government to act decisively to serve justice.

He encouraged Nigerians to unite for peace and security amidst the tumultuous circumstances. “Let this moment spur us to support those in need, remain united against violence, and promote charity,” he urged.

The apex Christian body also called on political leaders to foster understanding and reject mob actions.

“CAN reaffirms its commitment to dialogue and cooperation with Muslim leaders, promoting interfaith initiatives to build a stronger nation,” Archbishop Okoh stated.
