The First Lady of Nigeria, Senator Remi Tinubu, has called for an end to the discrimination faced by Nigerians living with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), urging citizens to embrace neurodiversity as a vital part of national development.

In a message commemorating the World Autism Awareness Day 2025, the First Lady highlighted the importance of creating an inclusive society where individuals on the autism spectrum are given equal access to education, healthcare, employment, and social opportunities.

“This year’s theme, ‘Advancing Neurodiversity and the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs),’ is a timely reminder that inclusion is not just a moral obligation but a cornerstone of sustainable development,” Mrs Tinubu said.

She noted that despite the unique skills and potential of autistic individuals, many still face stigma and systemic barriers, particularly in achieving the goals of quality education (SDG 4) and decent work (SDG 8).

“Neurodiversity is a beautiful testament to human uniqueness. We all process information differently,” she said. “It is our collective duty to ensure that no Nigerian is left behind because of how they think, learn, or interact with the world.”

Mrs Tinubu urged Nigerians to move beyond mere awareness and take concrete action towards inclusion, calling on policymakers, educators, employers, and community leaders to support initiatives that promote equal opportunities for neurodivergent citizens.

“On this special day, I encourage all Nigerians to advocate for inclusion and work together to create a society where every individual has the opportunity to excel,” she said.

World Autism Awareness Day is observed globally every April 2 to increase understanding and acceptance of people with autism and to foster worldwide support for their rights and well-being.
