Rivers State Governor Ezenwo Wike has warned against playing politics with the derecognition of Sir Celestine Ngozichim Omehia, as a former governor of the state.
Recall that the Rivers State House of Assembly had on Thursday unanimously adopted a motion presented by the leader of the House, Martin Amaewhule, derecognizing Omehia as a former governor of the state.
The motion, which ordered him to refund over N696 million received as benefits and pension so far as well as stop adding titles of “His Excellency” and “General Service Star of Rivers State (GSSRS)”
Wike spoke yesterday while signing the instrument of the former governor’s derecognition at the Executive Council Chambers of Government House, Port Harcourt.
The instrument of action was presented to the governor by presented by the State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Professor Zacchaeus Adangor.
Wike To Sign Omehia’s Derecognition As Former Governor Into Law
He urged people to get a copy of the Supreme Court judgment and understand that it is the right thing to derecognise Omehia in the eye of the law.
Wike said: “I had to call the Attorney General for him to give me his legal opinion as regards the resolution of the Assembly, and rightly the Attorney General said they (Assembly) are right.
“That in the first instance, the recognition was extra-judicial, that the Assembly has no power to change the judgment of any court, not to talk about the Supreme Court. So, people should understand and not to begin to play politics.”
The governor disclosed that he had always respected resolutions from the State Assembly and never had any reason to disagreed with them.
