NIHSA Unveils 2025 Annual Flood Outlook Thursday

Barring last-minute changes, the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA) will present the 2025 Annual Flood Outlook (AFO) to the public on Thursday.

This year’s AFO themed ‘Flood Resilience: Focusing on Communities Preparedness and Adaptive Strategies for Flood Management will be unveiled by the Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, Professor Joseph Utsev, at Ladi Kwali Hall, Abuja Continental Hotel Abuja- FCT.

In line with its mandate to advise the Government and the public on flood and water-related matters, NIHSA publishes annual flood forecasts in the first quarter of each year.

These forecasts include expected flood patterns and potential high-risk areas, helping stakeholders to prepare for and mitigate the impact of flooding in Nigeria.”

The Annual Flood Outlook is an essential tool to inform and prepare stakeholders and communities in Nigeria for impending flood risks. It forecasts flood-prone areas, including the likely severity and duration of flooding in different parts of the country.

The 2025 AFO will highlight anticipated flood scenarios, focusing on flood preparedness, early warning systems, and community-level adaptation strategies.

According to the Director General of NIHSA, Umar Ibrahim Mohammed, the Annual Flood Outlook provides data-driven, scientifically backed, and evidence-based information that supports proactive planning and response across sectors.’”

The publication outlines forecasts for critical infrastructure, vulnerable communities, expected flood timelines, flood risk communication, and adaptation measures.

The 2025 AFO’s public presentation will attract stakeholders from federal and state government agencies, non-governmental organisations, international development partners, academia, civil society organisations, the media, and the general public.
