A prison psychologist, Amber-Renee Gayle, has been sentenced to 28 months in prison after being convicted of having a sexual relationship with convicted murderer Rickcarlo Williams and helping him smuggle prohibited items into prison.
Reports said Gayle began working with Williams, 24, in 2023, when he started making sexual advances towards her.
She reportedly informed her superior about his advances but entered into a sexual relationship with him a year later, following an alleged personal health crisis and the discovery that her boyfriend of 10 years had been unfaithful.
During the relationship, Gayle allowed Williams to record videos of their sexual encounters in a “Cabin room” at HMP Swinfen Hall in Staffordshire, where she usually held therapy sessions with inmates.
The court heard that the pair exchanged more than 12,000 messages over a six-month period in 2024 using secret phones. The messages included intimate photographs of the two.
Prosecutors alleged that Gayle also helped Williams smuggle mobile phones, SIM cards, dongles and chargers into the prison. The items were concealed in a hollowed-out dictionary, a Heinz baked bean tin and a can of Monster energy drink.
The scheme involved 35 mobile phones, three phone chargers, four dongles and nine SIM cards, generating an estimated £9,500 in illegal earnings. The pair reportedly charged £50 for a SIM card, £500 for a USB stick and up to £2,000 for an iPhone.
Sentencing Gayle at Birmingham Crown Court on Wednesday, Judge Sarah Buckingham described her actions as a “gross breach of trust”, adding that “Corruption creates an unsafe environment for those working in the system.”
Gayle received 14 months’ imprisonment for conspiracy to convey prohibited items into prison and a consecutive eight-month term for misconduct in public office. She was also sentenced to an additional six months after admitting to accessing the prison’s National Offender Management Information System to obtain information about serving prisoners.
Williams, who is serving a minimum 25-year sentence for the 2020 machete killing of Hussein Al-Saabri, will have an additional 14 months added to his sentence when he becomes eligible for parole in 2043.
