The Resource Centre for Human Rights & Civic Education (CHRICED) has condemned the ongoing political crisis in Rivers State and called for a return to constitutional order.

In a statement signed by its Executive Director, Comrade Ibrahim Zikirullahi, on Wednesday, CHRICED criticised the recent trip to the UK undertaken by suspended members of the Rivers State House of Assembly, describing it as ill-timed and unjustified amid the prevailing tensions.

“Who approved this trip? Who is funding it? What capacity is being built by lawmakers currently suspended from office?” the group queried.

CHRICED characterised the trip as a diversionary tactic and urged political actors in Rivers State to prioritise resolving the crisis at home.

The organisation also expressed concerns over the involvement of unelected individuals in the state’s affairs, warning that such actions could undermine democracy.

Regarding the recent protests, CHRICED condemned the use of tear gas by police to disperse peaceful demonstrators opposing illegality in Rivers State.

“The deployment of tear gas to suppress citizens exercising their rights is unacceptable in a democracy,” the statement read.

CHRICED further questioned the recent appointments made in the state’s local governments and electoral commission by the sole administrator, Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas, calling them unconstitutional.

“As an unelected occupant of the Government House, Ibas has no authority to make such appointments,” the group stated.

It also criticised the Federal Government’s silence on these matters, suggesting that it could be interpreted as tolerance of constitutional breaches.

“The lack of response suggests that some individuals are above the law,” CHRICED remarked.

The group called for the reinstatement of Governor Siminalaye Fubara and urged all parties to respect democratic processes.

“Rivers State needs peace, lawful governance, and leadership that reflects the will of its people,” CHRICED added.
