The Labour Party in Nigeria has described the re-election of Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva for a fourth presidential term as a reflection of voters’ confidence in his leadership and the ideological principles of his party.
Lula, the candidate of Brazil’s Workers’ Party (PT), secured victory in the October 25 presidential run-off, defeating his challenger, Flávio Bolsonaro, of the Liberal Party.
According to official results, Lula polled 51.79 per cent of the valid votes, representing 64,256,232 votes, while Bolsonaro secured 48.21 per cent, equivalent to 59,826,041 votes.
His victory has attracted reactions from political movements, particularly left-leaning parties, across the world.
In a statement issued on Friday by its National Publicity Secretary, Ken Asogwa, the Nigerian Labour Party congratulated Lula, noting that it shared ideological ties with the Brazilian president’s Workers’ Party.
The party described both organisations as leftist and social democratic movements founded on similar political beliefs and a commitment to social welfare and equitable development.
It said: “The relationship between both parties is built on shared beliefs and a commitment to social democracy as an ideology.”
The Labour Party further noted that both movements were anchored on social democracy, which emphasises social welfare, economic inclusion and equitable development.
According to the party, Lula’s victory demonstrates the confidence reposed in his leadership and the political philosophy of the Workers’ Party by the Brazilian electorate.
It added that the Brazilian election offered an opportunity for Nigerians to reflect on the importance of ideological consistency and people-oriented governance as the country prepares for its next general elections.
The party also pledged to sustain its engagement with Nigerians ahead of the forthcoming elections, while encouraging greater participation in the democratic process.
Lula’s re-election secures him an unprecedented fourth, non-consecutive term as Brazil’s president, with his new tenure scheduled to begin in January 2027.
