The Sokoto Youth Emancipation Front (SYEF) has debunked claims by the national president of the National Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) Alhaji Ali Haruna Kankara that Sokoto is among the states that are yet to commence payment of the N70, 000 new minimum wage.

According to the group, the state government under the leadership of Gov. Ahmad Aliyu began payment of the new minimum wage to all categories of workers in January, 2025.

SYEF has therefore advised the NULGE National President to make inquiries into any development before making claims that are unfounded.

Chairman of the group, Comrade Hamisu Sani, while commending Gov. Aliyu for implementing the new wage, affirmed that Sokoto is among the first to pay the new national minimum wage in Nigeria.

“We want to make it categorically clear that Sokoto State is the first in the federation to fully implement the payment of N70,000 new national minimum wage to state, local government and LGEA staff.

“Therefore, what the NULGE national president, Ali Kankara, said was not true. The payment of 70,000 new national minimum wage commenced in Sokoto in January this year with all workers benefiting”.

While noting that, it is disheartening to see the NULGE National President, Ali Kankara, make such comments on issues he has no knowledge of, the group said Sokoto State Government pays the new minimum wage to all categories of workers, including those at the local government and LGEA.
