The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) Zonal Director for the Niger/Kaduna Zonal Directorate, Bawa Usman Kaltungo, has said 33 suspects were arrested for alleged internet fraud in their last operation in Niger State.

He made the revelation while speaking at the Niger State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) in Minna during a courtesy call to seek the support of journalists for their operations in the state.
Kaltungo explained the implications of allowing internet fraudsters to operate, adding those arrested would be arraigned in court as soon as investigations were concluded.

The zonal director observed that the internet fraudsters have made Niger State their safe haven hence the need for the support of journalists to effectively tackle the menace.
According to him, “The Media is one of the most strategic partners in the fight against corruption.

We, therefore, seek support and cooperation in this fight. Help us sensitise the public to understand and own the fight against corruption.

“There was an incident that happened recently in Niger State where our men came in and conducted an operation. What is happening in Niger State is the reason we want to carry you journalists along so that you can understand what is going on,” he added.

He said the commission was dealing with this menace because youth are becoming obsessed with the getting rich quick syndrome and cutting corners through internet fraud.

The chairman of NUJ Niger State Council Abu Nmodu in his remarks, assured the EFCC to check any form of economic and financial crime.

He reiterated the need to build confidence between the commission and journalists to rid the state of internet fraudsters and any other corrupt practices by taking proactive measures through sensitisation of the youths in their various schools.
