As Christians worldwide celebrate the Easter, the Controller General of the Federal Fire Service (FFS), Engr. Abdulganiyu O. Jaji, has issued critical warnings about water safety and risks associated with lighting barbecues.
With many families planning outdoor activities, Engr. Jaji emphasised the need for caution near swimming pools and other water bodies. He also cautioned against unsafe barbecue practices that could potentially lead to accidents or fires.
In a statement, Jaji urged families, especially young, enthusiastic barbecuers, to avoid lighting grills in areas prone to high winds or near dry vegetation which could quickly ignite into a fire hazard.
While congratulating Christians on the Easter celebration, Engr. Jaji also advised swimmers to remain in designated safe areas, particularly as activities around pools, lakes and beaches increase.
He highlighted the dangers of cold water and strong currents which pose risks even to experienced swimmers.
“Although the weather may be warm, the water can still be cold enough to induce cold water shock which can impair your breathing and movement,” he warned. He further stressed that dangerous currents could pull swimmers under, urging the public to avoid taking dips in open water like rivers and lakes.
For families preparing Easter meals, Engr. Jaji reminded everyone to practice kitchen safety. He cautioned never to leave cooking unattended and to remove pans from heat if leaving the kitchen, even briefly.
“Be mindful of hot surfaces and keep flammable items such as oven mitts, tea towels and cables away from the stove,” he added.
Jaji also called for unity and national cohesion, urging citizens to embrace harmony during this time of celebration.
Addressing the growing concern over fire outbreaks caused by tanker fires, the FFS boss reiterated his agency’s commitment to improving response times to disasters and emergencies. He said the FFS’s partnerships with key stakeholders were beginning to yield positive results in the fight against fire-related incidents.
