Father, Son 2 Other Workers Drown At Bauchi Dam

A tragic incident occurred on Sunday at the Gubi Dam facility in Bauchi State, claiming the lives of four workers during a routine cleaning of the urban water supply system.

Among the deceased were a father and his son, alongside two other workers, two of whom were permanent staff and two others casually engaged.

The deceased have been identified as Ibrahim Musa, Shu’aibu Hamza, Jamilu Yunusa, and Abdulmalik Ibrahim Hamza.

LEADERSHIP learned that the incident took place in a reservoir that supplies treated water to the Bauchi metropolis.

A staff at Urban Water Supply and Sewerage Corporation operates, told journalists that, “They were cleaning the reservoir when they spotted fish in the murky water. One of them attempted to catch the fish but drowned while following it.

“A second worker jumped in to rescue him but also drowned. The third and fourth workers followed in attempts to save their colleagues, but they too lost their lives. All four have been buried today, Sunday.”

One of the victims was said to be preparing for his wedding before the unfortunate incident.

The Corporation’s Communication Officer, Comrade Umar Jibrin, confirmed the incident to LEADERSHIP correspondent.

Umar said that the corporation was currently preoccupied with other matters related to the accident and promised to provide further details later.

The Bauchi State Commissioner for Water Resources, Nuhu Zaki, and the General Manager of the Corporation, Eng. Aminu Gital, had yet to respond to calls and messages at the time of filing this report.
