NAGGW Making Kano Greener

Kano state being one of the 11 Frontline states benefitting from the intervention of the Great Green Wall under the National Agency For Great Green Wall NAGGW is being set along the path of becoming greener.

With a mission of empowering communities to combat land degradation, enhance food security and build resilience to climate change using sustainable interventions and education, the Agency in Kano is mitigating desertification and land degradation in line with the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD), and improve the livelihood of affected communities.

It has established several shelterbelt and woodlots plantations as well as institutional and community plantings in strategic locations across Kano.

The field officer, Ahmad Muktar, who recently spoke to Leadership revealed that the Agency targeted institutions include military barracks and universities in planting some of the community trees in the state.

“So far in kano we have established the following plantations: About 70km Shelterbelt plantations. Over 120Ha Woodlots plantations. About 80Ha indigenous tree species plantations. 100Ha Acacia Senegal plantations. 70Ha Orchards plantations. Several institutional and social forestry plantings in locations like Northwest University, Kano University of Science and Technology Wudil, School of Informative Karfi, School of Nursing Madobi, School of Management Studies Kano among others.

“We have also done orchard establishment using Groasis water box technique at Janguza Barrack Kano” he stated.

He also gave a breakdown of interventions by the Agency in six local government areas of the state that are succeptible to desertification.

Ahmad also mentioned that over 100 women and youth have been trained and have benefitted from various skill acquisitions that include tailoring, knitting, perfume making and soap making.

“The interventions are mostly in the six local government areas of Danbatta, Makoda, Gabasawa, Ajingi, Bichi, and Gari (Kunchi).

“We also did training on animal fattening, and distributed small ruminants like sheep and goats.

“We distributed clean energy cooking stoves in various communities within and outside the state corridor” he added.

The Kano Field officer also mentioned the introduction of new planting methods that excited the communities and provided them with better methodologies of planting trees and vegetables with little or no water.

“Things we’ve done so far that the public could be aware of are establishment of plantations using the Groasis water box technology technique where you could plant trees or vegetables with little or no water.

“The box collects rain water and stores it for a very long period of time inside a reservoir. It also collect water by means of condensation and supplies the roots of the plant via a wig attached to it for a complete season” he explained.
