Man Bags 2 Months Jail Term For Felling Trees

A Magistrate Court sitting at Rijiyar Zaki, Kano State has convicted and sentenced one Inuwa Ayuba to two months imprisonment with an option of a fine for illegally felling seven neem trees at Sarauniya village in Dawakin Tofa local government area of the state.

Ayuba was also ordered to plant 14 neem trees as a penalty for the offence.

According to the prosecution counsel, Barr. Bahijja H. Aliyu, the monitoring team from the ministry of environment and climate change was alerted on the illegal felling of the trees at Sarauniya villageĀ  which contravenes provisions of the state’s environmental laws.

The commissioner for environment and climate change, Dr. Dahiru M. Hashim, commended theĀ  the ministry’s enforcement team and the judiciary for their support in protecting the state’s environment.

ā€œThe conviction of this individual serves as a deterrent to others who engage in illegal activities that harm our environment.

ā€œWe will continue to work tirelessly to protect and preserve our natural resources for the benefit of the present and future generations,ā€ he said.
