IPU, S/Africa, Ghana, Gambia Parliaments Storm Nigeria For Renewable Energy Confab

The International Parliamentary Union(IPU), South Africa, Ghana, and Gambia parliaments have confirmed attendance at the inaugural National Legislative Summit and Expo on Renewable Energy, which will be held in Lagos, Nigeria, between Monday and Tuesday next week, May 5– 6, 2025.
The event, tagged ‘Renew Nigeria: Unlocking Opportunities,’ will be hosted by the Committee in conjunction with the Speaker of the House of Representatives’ office.

Addressing journalists ahead of the conference in Abuja yeserday, the chairman of the House Committee on Renewable Energy, Hon. Afam Victor Ogene, said the deputy speaker, Hon. Alban Kingsford Bagbin, will lead the three-man delegation from Ghana.

Ogene also discloses that Netherlands-based Knowledge platform, will host a Pan-African Legislative Dialogue session, on Renewable Energy, to be chaired by the Nigerian speaker, Hon. Abass Tajudeen at the summit.

According to the lawmaker, the session will focus on how to establish a unified Legislative framework on Renewable Energy development, investment and financing.

He said the conference aimed at bringing together key stakeholders and industry players to discuss renewable energy legislations, energy transition, renewable energy financing, investment opportunities and related matters, towards developing a national legislative framework on renewable energy.
Ogene said the conference will specifically, “facilitate Knowledge exchange; promote dialogue among legislators, experts, and stakeholders on critical legislative priorities, regulatory frameworks, and global best practices to accelerate renewable energy adoption in Nigeria.

“Strengthen legislative collaboration; establish a coordinated platform for federal and state lawmakers to harmonise policies, address regulatory bottlenecks, and align efforts in advancing Nigeria’s renewable energy transition.

“Develop an action-oriented roadmap, by producing a clear, time-bound legislative action plan with prioritised reforms, investment
incentives, and accountability mechanisms to drive renewable energy growth and grid modernisation.”

He said the expected outcomes of the summit include proposed policy and legislative reform recommendations for promoting renewable energy use in Nigeria; legislative instruments for increasing private and public sector investment in renewables and
strengthened collaboration and coordination between federal and state governments at the legislative level in the energy sector.

Ogene said other outcomes are increased public understanding and awareness of the legislature’s importance in the renewable energy agenda in Nigeria, a robust implementation roadmap for action and a system for tracking progress, and a renewable energy technology showcase demonstrating the advances in renewables and opportunities for business partnerships.
