The labour force has been caught again between renewed governmental assurances and the persistent realities of economic hardship. President Bola Tinubu, during his May Day address to workers, promised his administration’s readiness to address pressing challenges.

The organised labour comprising the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) of Nigeria has highlighted numerous challenges workers faced, including escalating living costs, unemployment and insecurity.

Both NLC president, Comrade Joe Ajaero and president general of TUC, Comrade Festus Osifo, in a joint speech lamented the deteriorating condition of Nigerian workers, questioning whether it is a crime to be a worker in Nigeria.

The labour leaders also highlighted the paradox of increased labour leading to deeper poverty and called for justice in wage structures.

“Nigerian workers are not happy! Nigerian workers are hungry. Nigerian workers are suffering massively.

“We feel betrayed by the very people whose duty it is to ensure that we maintain a balance. We want to know whether it is a crime to be a worker in Nigeria? Why are we deliberately being made poor? Why are we being ground to the dust? “the labour leaders queried.

Historically, promises made to Nigerian workers have often fallen short.

For instance, the 2019 increase of the minimum wage to N30,000 was significantly eroded by inflation, leading to a further increase to N70,000 in 2024. However, the real value of wages continues to decline due to rising inflation rates, which have reached a 28-year high.

The disconnect between governmental promises and the lived experiences of workers stressed the need for tangible action.

However, while acknowledging the significant challenges faced by Nigerian workers, President Tinubu pledged to collaborate with labour unions, the private sector, and civil society to implement policies aimed at job creation, poverty alleviation, and economic stability.

The President acknowledged the challenges Nigerians face from rising cost of living to insecurity and unemployment among others, stating he will address these challenges.

“My administration is not only committed but intentional in formulating and implementing policies that promote job creation, decent jobs, poverty alleviation, economic growth and stability, as well as supporting the most vulnerable among us”, the President said.

He encouraged workers and the federal government to work together to ensure that every worker has access to opportunities that enable them to thrive.
