Gombe: Healthcare Revolution At Grassroots

As many communities in Nigeria still struggle with access to basic healthcare, Gombe State under Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya is scripting a remarkable success story, one that deserves national attention.

Primary Healthcare Centres (PHCs) across the state, once marked by crumbling walls, empty dispensaries, and frustrated patients, are now being reborn. They are returning to life; renovated, re-equipped, and re-energized to serve the very people they were built for. This is not a political showpiece or campaign gesture; it is a deliberate, well-planned, and far-reaching revolution in the way healthcare is delivered at the grassroots.

From Dadiya in Balanga LGA, where a newly refurbished PHC now stands as a symbol of renewed hope, to Tula-Yiri in Kaltungo, where residents once forgotten now have a reliable place to access care, the impact is tangible. These facilities are no longer abandoned structures; they are now functioning hubs for antenatal care, immunizations, malaria treatment, and other essential services.

And these are not isolated cases. Governor Inuwa Yahaya’s administration has launched a statewide revitalization programme targeting over 200 health facilities across all 114 wards of Gombe State. The objective is simple yet profound: to ensure that no ward is left behind, and that every citizen, no matter how remote their location, has access to basic and quality healthcare services.

This initiative is part of a broader commitment to strengthen human capital development in Gombe, which is a cornerstone of the Governor’s development agenda. It ties into reforms under the Gombe State Contributory Healthcare Management Agency (GoHealth), the efforts to strengthen the State Drug Management Agency (GODMA), and continued investments in health workforce training and deployment.

The work is ongoing, visible, and deeply appreciated by those it serves. These efforts are giving life back to health centres, and dignity back to rural health-seeking experiences.
It is often said that health is wealth, but in Gombe State today, health is becoming more than a proverb; it is a policy, a priority, and a lived reality.

What is unfolding in Gombe is a lesson in leadership: that when a government listens, plans, and acts with purpose, even the most rural corners of society can feel the impact.

Indeed, the story of healthcare transformation in Gombe State is far from over. But already, it stands as a clear example of what is possible when political will meets vision, and vision meets action.
Healthcare is not a privilege; it is a right. And in Gombe State, that right is being delivered, one community at a time.
