The Chief Justice of Nigeria, Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, has endorsed a new maritime law publication, recognising it as a vital resource that promises to enhance Nigeria’s judicial framework and stimulate economic growth, particularly in international trade.

During the book’s presentation in Lagos, she highlighted its potential to serve as a foundational text, empowering the judiciary to resolve trade and shipping disputes with greater efficiency.

Authored by Mfon Ekong Usoro, the book titled “International Trade and Carriage of Goods by Sea: Text, Cases, and Materials,” offers a practical lens through which to examine legal issues surrounding carriage contracts, cargo liabilities, and dispute resolution, both locally and internationally.

Kekere-Ekun stated that “by breaking down complex concepts using case studies, diagrams, and statutory references, this publication aims to elevate the quality of judicial decisions and enrich legal education in this critical sector.”

She expressed confidence that the book aligns with the needs of Nigeria’s legal system by respecting local precedents while incorporating insights from global legal judgments, saying “this comprehensive approach guides courts toward a more consistent methodology and instils confidence among practitioners as they navigate negotiations, mitigation, and arbitration across borders.”

The Chief Justice commended Usoro for her significant contributions to legal advancement in Nigeria, noting that the book is a reflection of her extensive legal experience and dedication to fostering institutional improvement.

With over 90 per cent of Nigeria’s international trade conducted by sea, she emphasised the urgent necessity for clear legal frameworks to facilitate transactions and efficiently address disputes.

Founder of Dangote Group, Aliko Dangote echoed these sentiments in his goodwill message, labelling the book as essential for businesses engaged in global trade.

“This resource enhances certainty in commercial transactions and bolsters confidence among business operators,” he stated.

He acknowledged the author’s valuable contributions to trade and legal practice in Nigeria, adding that “the book, which seamlessly integrates both local and international legal standards, is intended to be a vital reference for legal professionals, regulators, financial institutions, and stakeholders in the trade and shipping sectors.”

He emphasised its practicality and relevance for both seasoned professionals and newcomers in the legal and commercial arenas.
