Catholic Church in Nigeria has expressed its expectations that Pope Leo XIV will play a pivotal role in bringing people back to God, especially in light of a troubling trend of increasing secularism and ideologies that seek to diminish the divine.

The National Director of Social Communications of the Catholic Secretariat of Nigeria, Rev. Fr. Michael Nsikk Umoh, shared insights with LEADERSHIP on the expectations from the newly elected Pope, titled

‘The Spirit of Leadership: Expectations from Pope Leo XIV.’
He emphasised the pressing challenges that both the Church and the global community face today.

“Today, more than ever, the world yearns for these very needs. Our world is beset by poverty, famine, hunger, violence, exploitation, and human suffering, underscoring the relevance of the Pope’s mission,” Umoh stated.

He expressed concerns over the growing trend of individuals moving away from God, coupled with various ideologies attempting to eliminate the divine from societal discussions.

Umoh also underscored the necessity for these challenges, both internal and external to the Church, to form a significant part of Pope Leo XIV’s agenda.

“These challenges should be a significant part of Pope Leo XIV’s agenda. The papal name he has chosen offers insight into the possible direction of his papacy, drawing inspiration from Pope Leo XIII, known for championing human dignity,” he said.

Drawing connections to the previous pontificate, Umoh noted, “This highlights a potential connection and continuity with Pope Francis’ pontificate, who is notably known as the Pope of the poor and marginalised, as well as the Pope of Mercy.”

He suggested that Pope Leo XIV might continue and build upon Francis’ efforts in focusing on global issues such as oppression and exploitation while fostering interfaith dialogue and human fraternity.

The director further stressed the importance of addressing any unclear messages from Pope Francis, stating, “As a seasoned pastor, teacher, and formator who has worked in tough terrains, one could argue, with utmost respect and responsibility, that Pope Leo XIV may need to clarify certain messages from Pope Francis that were not fully understood by some Catholics and non-Catholics, where necessary.”

Meanwhile, the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has congratulated the Roman Catholic Church on the election of Pope Leo XIV.

In a statement signed by the CAN president, Archbishop Daniel Okoh, the association said the significant milestone brought joy to Catholics worldwide, and CAN joined in celebrating the momentous occasion.

“The emergence of Pope Leo XIV signifies renewal and hope for the Catholic Church. CAN is confident that the new pontiff will advance peace, justice and inclusiveness, continuing the legacy of his predecessors.

“CAN prays that Pope Leo XIV’s pontificate be blessed with wisdom, good health and strength to lead God’s people on the path of righteousness. May God guide and strengthen him in his ministry,” he stated.
