Professor Chris Piwuna has emerged as the new President of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).
Piwuna, a consultant psychiatrist at the University of Jos Teaching Hospital (JUTH) and current Dean of Student Affairs at the University of Jos, Plateau State, succeeds Professor Victor Osodeke, a soil science expert from Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike, Abia State.
According to verified sources familiar with the development, Piwuna contested the position alongside Professor Adamu Babayo of Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University (ATBU), Bauchi.
LEADERSHIP gathered that the election was conducted during the 23rd National Delegates Congress of the Union, which took place on Sunday in Benin City, Edo State.
Piwuna assumes office at a critical time, amid growing concerns over potential industrial action.
The concerns stemmed from unresolved issues, including the sharing formula of the recently released Earned Academic Allowances by the Federal Government, persistent brain drain, and other lingering challenges in the Nigeria’s university system.
