In a significant step toward revitalizing Nigeria’s sports infrastructure, a team of world-renowned experts arrived in Abuja on Wednesday to conduct a detailed assessment of the Moshood Abiola National Stadium. This initiative is part of the National Sports Commission’s (NSC) efforts to refurbish and upgrade sporting facilities across the country as mandated by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

The three-day visit by the European stadium development specialists, renowned for their work with top-tier venues such as Bayern Munich’s Allianz Arena and Juventus Stadium, marks the beginning of a comprehensive evaluation of the stadium’s pitch, drainage, and ancillary facilities. The assessment is part of a strategic plan initiated by NSC Chairman Mallam Shehu Dikko following his engagements with global experts in Europe in April.

Mallam Dikko, who personally guided the experts during their inspection, emphasized the necessity of this upgrade. “The sports economy revolves around quality sporting infrastructure, and this is exactly what we have set out to achieve, starting with the Moshood Abiola Stadium,” he stated. “Our goal is to create sustainable sporting facilities that not only meet international standards but also contribute to job creation and economic growth in our communities.”

The inspection team evaluated critical components of the stadium, including the pitch, irrigation systems, and dressing rooms. They proposed a sustainable pathway for refurbishment, laying the groundwork for transforming the stadium into a venue that meets global standards. The projected timeline for the upgrade is set to commence in September 2025, following the completion of the analysis and necessary protocols.

Dikko expressed optimism about the project, calling it a “proof of concept” that would set the standard for future upgrades across Nigeria. “One thing that we cannot condone is having only one stadium in the country that meets FIFA standards. That is absolutely unacceptable,” he asserted.

As Nigeria steps into this vital phase of sports development, the upgraded Moshood Abiola National Stadium is expected to serve not only as a premier sports venue but also as a catalyst for advancing the nation’s sports economy. With this upgrade, the NSC aims to inspire confidence in the potential of Nigeria’s sports infrastructure and promote sustainable practices for the future.

The visit of these experts is a promising step toward the realization of a national vision—one that seeks to enhance sporting facilities across the country and pave the way for a robust sports economy. Director of Facilities, Mr. Mohammed Rabiu, and Director of Finance and Accounts, Mr. Mustapha Ladan, were also present during the assessment, contributing their insights alongside technical personnel from the NSC.
