Supporters of Labour Party presidential candidate, Mr Peter Obi, from Nigeria’s North-Central region have expressed reservations over reports of a potential political alliance between Obi and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, which involves a joint ticket.

In Abuja, the group chairman, Bitrus Samuel, and secretary, Murtala Ndagi, the group—under the name North-Central Region of Nigeria Supporters for Mr Peter Obi—urged Obi to reconsider any proposal that would see him take on the role of Vice President in a single-term joint ticket with Atiku.

According to the statement released on Tuesday, the group raised concerns about the possible impact such a partnership could have on Obi’s public image and the ideals they believe he represents.
The group cited perceived differences in values between the two politicians, stating that Obi’s reputation for integrity and accountability could be questioned if he aligns with Atiku, who has faced allegations of misconduct in the past.

They argued that this could affect the support base Obi has built, particularly in the North-Central region.

They also noted that any alliance perceived to downplay concerns over public accountability could have broader implications for public trust and voter confidence.

While reaffirming their support for Obi, the group appealed to him to remain focused on the ideals that have earned him a following across the country. They concluded by urging him to carefully consider the long-term implications of his political decisions.

The group reflects ongoing discussions within Nigeria’s political landscape as the 2027 general elections approach. Neither Obi nor Atiku has publicly confirmed any plans regarding a joint ticket.
