The president of the Nigeria Tennis Federation (NTF), Engineer Ifedayo Akindoju, has commended the performance of homegrown tennis players at the ongoing National Sports Festival in Abeokuta, Ogun State, expressing his satisfaction with their competitiveness and development.

His comments came after an exhilarating semifinal match between US-based Ogun State player Christopher Bulus and local contender Daniel Adeleye from Ekiti State. Bulus secured a place in the final with a 6-3, 6-3 victory, yet Adeleye’s impressive performance drew praise.

“The semifinal clash between Ogun and Ekiti—Bulus Christopher versus Daniel Adeleye—was remarkable,” Akindoju remarked. “It reinforced my belief that local players are strong, competitive, and ready to contend.”

He also praised the quality of the second semifinal, featuring Canice Abua and David Ekpeyong, noting the high standard of play displayed in both matches. “The quality was exceptional, and I am genuinely pleased with what I witnessed.”

Regarding the women’s performance, Akindoju highlighted the potential shown by junior female players under 15, stating, “They exhibited impressive tennis and demonstrated a strong desire to take the reins from the senior players.”

Looking ahead to the men’s singles final, where Ogun State’s Bulus will face Bayelsa’s Ekpeyong, Akindoju anticipates an exciting match. However, he expressed concern about Ekpeyong’s fitness after he experienced cramps during his semifinal contest. “I hope the medical team can prepare him. If he’s fit, it promises to be a fierce battle.”
