The state project coordinator of the Agro-Climatic Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscapes (ACReSAL) project in Yobe State, Shehu Alhaji Mohammed, has led a team on an inspection tour of the ongoing 8.9-kilometre Damaturu Gully Erosion Flood Control Project.

During the inspection visit, he said that the project is concurrently being implemented in Damaturu and Buniyadi, Gujba local government area.

According to him, the project aims to protect lives and properties, secure agricultural lands and promote irrigation farming as part of broader efforts to enhance climate resilience in the state.
He also said that the Governor Buni-led administration was committed to deploying strategic interventions to curb the adverse effects of flooding across the state.

“Yobe is an agrarian state and the majority of our people are engaged in various forms of farming. So, this project is an opportunity to turn a challenge into a long-term asset for our farmers.

“Yobe, under the leadership of Buni, is exploring all possible avenues to mitigate the impact of flood incidents on our people by constructing a standard canal system designed to effectively channel floodwater,” he stated.

He maintained that the project has a unique design that involves harnessing the collected water for irrigation purposes. This, he said, is in line with the state’s vision of achieving environmental sustainability while enhancing livelihoods.

“We are not only interested in channelling the water into drainage systems; we are also capturing it at the endpoint for irrigation farming,” he said.

The project, awarded by the Yobe State Government through the ACReSAL project, is designed to address the persistent flooding challenges in Damaturu and surrounding communities.
