Tragedy struck on Saturday as members of the Kano State contingent returning from the National Sports Festival (NSF), dubbed ‘2024 Gateway Games’ in Ogun State, were involved in a fatal motor accident during their return trip near Kura local government area of Kano State.

The vehicle, which was reportedly carrying at least 35 passengers—mainly athletes and officials, plunged from a bridge on their road back to the state from the games, resulting in multiple casualties.

Eyewitness accounts confirmed that several passengers lost their lives at the scene, while others sustained varying degrees of injuries. The injured were rushed to the Kura General Hospital for urgent medical attention.

As of the time of filing this report, authorities were yet to release an official statement regarding the number of fatalities or the possible cause of the accident.

LEADERSHIP reports that the Kano State delegation to the games secured 29 cummulative medals at the 22nd National Sports Festival, which ended on Friday, May 29, 2025.
