The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has commenced investigation into the accident that claimed the lives of 22 Kano State contingent while returning to the state after the just-concluded National Sports Festival in Abeokuta, Ogun State capital.

FRSC Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, made this known when he paid a condolence visit to the Kano State Government over the incident, on Monday.

Represented by the Zone 1 Zonal Commander, Assistant Corps Marshal Ahmad Umar, the Corps Marshal said the scene where the accident occurred has been a notorious spot prone to fatal road traffic crashes.

According to him, “We in FRSC believe that road traffic crashes do not just occur, but it is caused by some factors which we believe if proper managed, situation can be greatly averted.

“Part of our mandate is to conduct researches into the causes of road traffic crashes to proffer solutions or recommendations to the appropriate authorities.

“That particular spot is quite notorious for being prone to fatal road traffic crashes.

“We have already initiated an investigation into the remote and immediate cause of the tragic crash, and we are going to make our observations and recommendations available not only to our headquarters but even the Kano State Government for further necessary actions to avoid reoccurrence of this kind of tragic loss.

“We believe with necessary collaboration, we can mitigate or prevent further loss of lives,” he stated.

While sympathising with the state government and families of the deceased and injured persons, the Corps Marshal restated the commitment of the corps to educating members of the public on proper road use, discipline and safety.

In his remarks, the Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf who was represented by his deputy, Comrade Aminu Gwarzo, thanked the corps for their visit.

He also lamented that the particular spot of the accident has recorded fatal accidents for decades, noting that the government is willing to do anything humanly possible to prevent such incidents and loss of lives in the state.

“Anywhere you know that is a death trap within and outside the city, please don’t hesitate to tell government, it is a duty that we would collectively rise to,” he stated.

He, however, described the loss of 22 young people in the state as shocking and devastating, adding that the visit demonstrates the corps’ concern and sympathy to the people of Kano State and families of the deceased persons.
